Top 6 iPhone Apps You Can’t Live Without

topiphoneapps Top 6 iPhone Apps You Can’t Live WithoutApple commercials are known for their effectiveness or smugness depending on where you sit. Have you seen the one that begins, “If you don’t have an iPhone…” I find that one particularly snobby, but as someone who has both a Blackberry and an iPhone, I have to agree.

While the Blackberry is my business workhorse, allowing me to quickly access and respond to emails and Skypes, Blackberry apps just don’t compare to iPhone apps. From the ease of installing (I despise the Blackberry app store and installation process) to the incredible and varied selection, Apple wins apps.

Here are six of my suggestions for iPhone apps you didn’t knew you can’t live without:

RunPee

runpee Top 6 iPhone Apps You Can’t Live Without

Can’t make it through a movie without having to go to the bathroom? This app tells when the plot takes a non-essential turn so you can “run pee.” It even archives movies in theaters now.

C25Kapp

c25kapp Top 6 iPhone Apps You Can’t Live Without

Speaking of running, last year, C25Kapp (Couch to 5k) turned me into a runner. The app also tracks your pace and distance and you can share your runs with your social networks, inspiring others to get off the couch, too. If you never thought you could be a runner but you are willing to try, I highly recommend this app. Add your music and go. In just nine weeks, you’ll be running a 5K.

Pinterest

pinterest Top 6 iPhone Apps You Can’t Live Without

This is my go-to app (there is also a web version) when I have 5 or 10 minutes to kill. Think of it as a grouping of bulletin boards where you pin images of pretty or interesting things. Things that inspire you or things you want to remember. I’m using it to plan a living room decorating project. I pin things that I like and I can share my board with my husband so he can see what I’m thinking.

Socialcam

socialcam thumb 550x389 5013 Top 6 iPhone Apps You Can’t Live Without

Finally, a relatively quick and ridiculously easy way to take video and then share it, either with your social networks or via email. Think of it like instagram for video (without the fun effects.) This is the video app I’ve been waiting for.

CubeDog

cubedog Top 6 iPhone Apps You Can’t Live Without

If you’re a parent, you know that one of the best uses for your iPhone is to keep your kids occupied in desperate moments. Cube Dog is an adorable dog who is always with you. It’s the tamagochi for now generation. My 7-year-old daughter loves playing with her Cube Dogs (she has three) who respond when you pet or tickle them. There are some amazing “tricks” you can do with your Cube Dog, too. And best of all, no poop to pick up!

Weight Watchers Mobile

weightwatcherscgc thumb 550x397 5018 Top 6 iPhone Apps You Can’t Live Without

If you are a “tracker” (that’s my insider Weight Watchers speak) you should be using the mobile app. Not only is it a convenient way to track your points, but it is an invaluable resource when it comes to recipes (both finding and building), evaluating restaurant menus, tracking weight and workouts, all in a beautifully-designed, intuitive app. This is not your mother’s Weight Watchers–anyone interested in mobile app design and usability should check out Weight Watchers Mobile. It’s a Webby People’s Voice winner for a reason. Not just for iPhone, either.

Top 11 Incredibly Simple Ways to Infuse Your Life with Bliss, Happiness and Joy

bliss batteries company.com 300x200 Top 11 Incredibly Simple Ways to Infuse Your Life with Bliss, Happiness and Joy

By Henri Junttila

What do you really want from life?

I mean really, really want. If you sit down and think about why you want anything, you can almost always discover that the main reason is because you want to feel a certain way.

It could be to feel peace of mind, fulfillment, purpose, or even freedom.

You may think you want money, but what does money give you? Freedom? And what does freedom give you?

On and on it goes and if you dig deep enough, you’ll realize that all you truly want is to feel good. I’m not saying this is the case for everyone, but it is for most.

When you’ve read this article, you will have 11 concrete tips on how you can dramatically crank up the happiness level in your life.

And with that said, let’s get to the 11 simple ways to infuse your life with bliss, happiness, and joy, shall we?

1. Clarity

You easily have the potential to be happy right now. Try this: Imagine yourself in a pool trying to hold a beach ball under the water.

It’s hard, isn’t it?

As soon as you let go, it will float back up to the surface where it belongs. We as humans are much the same way, because when you remove all the negative layers you have collected since childhood, you will naturally feel happy and blissful.

However, you have to be clear about what it is you want from life. Now, obviously happiness comes from the inside, but the more you know what you want, the happier you will be.

2. Set Goals

The first step to clarity is to set specific goals.

Most people never set any goals at all, because they’ve been told not get their hopes up and not go after their dreams, because it’s easier to settle for less than to be disappointed.

Or is it?

Realize that these thoughts are not your own, because they’ve been handed down from your ancestors and parents and teachers since the beginning of time.

It’s time for a change.

3. Imagine Your Ideal Life

Once you have your goals set, visualize them and imagine living them right now.

When we’re children, we constantly daydream about things such as what you want to do when you grow up, and how much fun you will have.

If nothing else, this will make you feel much better and happier. Even so, there’s a lot of research on the power of visualization using your imagination that cannot be denied.

4. Cultivate the Positive Habit

It’s easy to think negative thoughts, but realize the way you think today is nothing but a habit.

There are people that think mostly positive thoughts and there are people that think mostly negative thoughts.

This can be changed and should be changed if you want to infuse your life with grace, joy and happiness.

As you continue reading this article, you may have noticed starting to feel better and better yourself, haven’t you?

It’s all about the words I’ve used in this article. I’ve focused mostly on the positive and on making you feel better.

5. Change Your Sources

One of the best ways to cultivate positive thinking is to change your sources.

By this I mean stop watching TV, stop hanging around negative friends, and stop reading stuff that makes you feel not totally amazing.

Start reading personal development material that motivates, inspires, and encourages you to become more.

You have the potential to become much, much more than you think. When you change the input you give your mind, you change your life.

6. Give

Another great way to infuse your life with positivity is to give people what you want to get.

Have you ever helped somebody, or given somebody something that made them so happy they thanked you profusely or even hugged you?

How good doesn’t it feel to make someone else happy? I don’t know how good it feels for you, but I know it feels amazing whenever I do something nice for someone else.

This can mean volunteering, helping children, or coaching people in something that you are very good at.

Dell inspiron 9400 battery – Brand New 4400mAh Only AU $62.07

HP pavilion dv5 laptop battery – Brand New 5200mAh Only AU $67.07

7. Embrace You

You are a unique human being.

We are bombarded with advertising and marketing messages that makes you feel less because that is what makes you want to buy, and that is what keeps companies running.

But realize that you are perfect as you are, and there’s no one like on this planet. You are here for a reason and you have a purpose to fulfill.

When you accept yourself, you immediately begin to feel better and begin to focus on the positive future ahead of you.

8. Ignore Everybody

Ignore everybody and follow your heart.

It’s very easy to get confused with all the conflicting information out there, because your heart is telling you one thing while many so called “experts” tell you to do something completely different.

I’m not telling you to not learn from people. I’m just suggesting that maybe you know more than you think you do.

9. Take Action

One of the most common characteristics of happy and successful people is that they are constantly taking action towards their goals.

Once people stop pursuing their goals, their lives don’t feel the same anymore. In fact, most people do not have any goals at all, which explains a lot of the unhappiness today.

Make sure you have goals, and make sure you’re taking action toward them even if you don’t know if you’re on the right path.

10. Embrace the Uncomfortable

To become a living example of happiness, you must love personal growth.

Almost every growth experience comes dressed up in work clothes, which is often uncomfortable. But each of these experiences is what will ultimately help you grow.

Once you realize this, you embrace uncomfortable events and experiences, because you know that they are there for a reason.

11. Find Your Passion

Finding your passion can be mysterious. However, it is usually only as hard as you make it out to be.

You see, there is no one perfect passion for most people. We all have several interests and often those interests lead us on a path instead of taking us to a destination.

It can be helpful to think of your passion as a goal to aim at but not one that you will always reach.

You can easily increase the happiness in your life if you truly want to. As you decide to do so, you will immediately feel better and new ideas will start flooding into your mind.

What I am trying to convey with this article is this: You can feel good now, if you would only make the choice.

Cambridge study says running could help jog memory and help brain grow

Running can help boost your brain power and help you overcome a forgetful memory, a Cambridge University study has suggested.

sarkozy460 1451304c Cambridge study says running could help jog memory and help brain grow French President Nicolas Sarkozy and wife Carla are known to be avid joggers.

Jogging a couple of days a week was shown to stimulate the brain, which led to a big impact on mental ability, university neuroscientists discovered.

The study, conducted with the US National Institute on Ageing in Maryland, found that a few days of running led to the growth of hundreds of thousands of new brain cells in a region that is linked to the formation and recollection of memories.

Running improved the ability to recall memories without confusing them, a skill that is crucial for learning and other cognitive tasks, according to the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

It could lead to new ways of potentially slowing down deterioration of mental ability which can affect many people in old age.

“We know exercise can be good for healthy brain function, but this work provides us with a mechanism for the effect,” said Timothy Bussey, a behavioural neuroscientist at Cambridge and the study’s senior author.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, 54, is know to be a keen runner and took up the excercise after marrying model and singer Carla Bruni.

The study followed two groups of mice, one of which had unlimited access to a running wheel throughout, whey they clocked up an average of 15 miles (24km) a day, while the other mice formed a control group.

During the brief training sessions, they were placed in front of a computer screen which displayed two identical squares side by side.

According to the study, if they nudged the one on the left with their nose they received a sugar pellet reward.

If they nudged the one on the right, they got nothing.

They were then subjected to a memory test where the more they nudged the correct square, the better they scored.

The running mice scored nearly twice as high as the control group during the memory test, the scientists discovered, while the greatest improvement occurred in the later stages of the experiment, when the two squares were so close they nearly touched.

“At this stage of the experiment, the two memories the mice are forming of the squares are very similar,” Dr Bussey told The Guardian.

“It is when they have to distinguish between the two that these new brain cells really make a difference.”

The scientists also tried to confuse the mice by switching the square that produced a food reward.

But the running mice were quicker to catch on when scientists changed them around, the study concluded.

Cool Camera Bags Giveaway

Free Camera Bag Giveaway batteries company.com Cool Camera Bags GiveawayIt’s been a common complaint for us DSLR-toting ladies: traditional camera bags are ugly, unwieldy, and inconvenient. But the days of being saddled with squat “gear bags” are finally over! Several women photographers, who also happen to have an extra helping of creative genius and drive, have designed pretty, functional and all around awesome bags that protect your camera and your style sensibilities.

Here are a few of my favorites:

epiphanie lyric bag Cool Camera Bags GiveawayEpiphanie BagsThe creation of photographer and blogger Maile Wilson Epiphanie Bags* come in seven pretty, light, and versatile styles, with padded inserts that can be reconfigured to fit your lenses, flash, wallet and favorite sunglasses. One the extra fun things about the site is that the “bag models” are all active blogger/photographers, so you can feel like you’re getting a smidge of their stardust and talent along with your dream camera bag!

All seven styles have something to recommend them. The recently added/new favorite Lyric style ($159) has an external pocket that’s perfect for your iPad, and the Clover and Paris ($184.99 each) are both big enough to hold your 15″ Macbook Pro.

*Note: Epiphanie Bags is a client of Clever Girls, but our love for Maile and her bags started long before our business relationship!

Kelly Moore

Photographer Kelly Moore is another woman who wanted a better bag option, so she made a wishlist. The result is a series of satchels, hobos and totes — which work for men or women! — in a range of colors that will tempt photographers, travelers and girls who just love bags.

One of the best things about the site is that there are several photos for each style/color, including on a model so you can see the scale of the bag on a person. Plus they show the bags with a wide variety of the crazy stuff that we really put in our bags. Like popcorn.

Yes, popcorn.

If your home is makes you feel like you’re heading toward an episode of Hoarders, start small: Focus on one clutter-packed zone (even that junk drawer in your kitchen) and get that in order, then move on to the more-intimidating areas (hello, garage!).

  3. Get On Top of Finances

Even if cash is really tight, 2012 can be the year you finally get a sense of control over your money.

  4. Spend More Time with Family and Friends

A lot of us feel we don’t spend enough quality time with those we love. So pick up the phone or fire up the computer and start arranging experiences that you can do together. Here’s one way: Send an e-mail invite to a picnic in a centrally located park. Everyone brings food and drink‚ and a smorgasbord of catch-up results.

  5. Get Fit

Okay, this January you’ll finally say, “No excuses!” Schedule regular time to get active, and stick with it. Handy hint: Make a date today with a pal to walk once a week for 50 minutes.

  6. Quit Smoking

You know all the ways cigarettes hurt your body — that they dramatically increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, high blood pressure, and almost every other health concern, small or large. So if you’ve still got the habit, this can be the year you ditch it.

  7. Smell the Roses

Lost your mojo? The easiest way to kick-start your joie de vivre is to focus on those little things that give you pleasure. Every day, have a moment where you focus on just a small, immediate enjoyment, like a great song on the radio, a tasty peach, a pet’s licks, your friends’ thoughtfulness, or an unexpected invitation.

  8. Tackle Your Drinking

If drinking is doing you more harm than good, stop altogether, learn to moderate or get support (such as from Alcoholics Anonymous) if you can’t control your intake on your own. (Those living with alcoholics will also find friends at AA.)

 9. Learn Something New

There’s nothing more esteem-building than getting an additional qualification under your belt. Your career options widen, you meet new people and you exercise your brain. Check out local community colleges, which offer a range of inexpensive courses.

  10. Help Others

Every day, we’re hearing about a new catastrophe in some corner of the globe, so it’s no surprise that “volunteering vacations” are booming worldwide. But you don’t have to head to a far-flunch locate (or spend money) to make the world better — offering your time, or if that’s in short supply, simply donating furniture, clothes and other household items can help someone in need (and make you feel great).

 11. Land a New Job

Whether you’re itching to switch careers or have recently lost your job, there are plenty of reasons these days to stay current (read: keep your resume updated and don’t stop proving you bring something to the table).

  12. See the World (or Even the State!)

Get a new perspective on things — literally and figuratively — by putting yourself into a new environment. And it doesn’t mean hopping on a plane — there are plenty of fresh locales within driving distance from where you live.

  13. Find Your Zen

If even thinking about all these changes starts getting you stressed out, make a vow this year to chill out.

Way to Hack the Thoughts Keeping You From Your Dream

dreaming 300x184 Way to Hack the Thoughts Keeping You From Your Dream

We all have a way in which we secretly want to change the world, but we’re scared to death to try. I want you to bring that secret desire into your awareness, to feel it in your heart and soul, right now. Maybe you want to publish a novel, or leave your job and start a business. Maybe you want to paint or sculpt or write poetry.

But if you’re like me, every time you try to get out of the box that it feels like you’re in, a thought or two pops up and says “No. Not You. Not Now.”

I’ve found a way to push through those thoughts.

There are a lot of things that probably need to happen for you to realize your dream. And while the whole thing might scare you, there are a lot of pieces that aren’t scary at all. The fear maker in the brain, a walnut-sized region called the amygdala, only gets triggered with urgent, immediate danger. So that means you can sneak up on it with a lot of success. And you can do it a little at a time.

Break your dream down into very specific tasks. Each day, do one specific thing to make progress toward your dream. If it’s writing a book, or a screenplay, start writing in a journal. Write every day. Read things that are similar to what you want to write. Learn and practice technique. You can probably fill in a hundred other things that you need to do to make a book a success. Do them. One at a time.

To maximize your chances of doing this, you’ll want to set up a specific place and time to do this. Time for you and your dream. Every day. Even if it’s only 15 minutes, you’ll be surprised how much you can accomplish, how much momentum you can develop.

Sometimes, even with the momentum you’re establishing, one of those tasks is going to bring up fear. It’s going to feel big and daunting. And here you have a couple of options.

The first one is to do it anyway. To push through. That’s the preferable approach. But sometimes it just feels impossible. Like there is a wall standing in your way. Like you have one shot at something and it has to be perfect. That if you fail you’ll not see a chance like this for some time.

That’s a lot of pressure, and it can paralyze you. But you can break these kinds of scary tasks into even smaller chunks than you did before. This can actually mean more work sometimes, but it can really pay dividends, too.

Let’s say you’ve written a screenplay and your agent (getting an agent was one of your tasks) has lined up a pitch meeting for you. You’ve never done one before and you’re scared to death. Paralyzed.

But I doubt you’re afraid of asking your agent about pitch meetings. I doubt you’re afraid of reading a book on how to pitch your screenplay. I doubt you are afraid of writing a pitch. And I doubt you’re afraid of practice the pitch in a room by yourself (though you may feel a bit silly).

So you can go a long ways toward your goal without bringing up much fear. But there’s even more you can do, and probably should.

What if you gave your thoroughly rehearsed pitch to a person who knows you and loves you and will only give you the most well-intentioned feedback?

And what if you took that feedback and gave your pitch to three more people? To a group you’ve cultivated who support you? And what if you kept doing that, kept tinkering and refining until the feedback that you got was that it was outstanding, compelling, perfect? Until you literally could not find a way to improve upon it?

By the time you actually have to give the pitch, with several rounds of feedback and several drafts, with every word tested and refined, how much fear do you think you will have?

The fear will still be there, but it will be much more manageable. When your thoughts will turn from things you can do to things you’ve already done, you’ll know that you’re no longer making things better. You’re just delaying. It’s time. Time to push through.

By taking on big goals as a series of little steps, I’ve found I can not only accomplish a lot more, but because I am getting feedback along the way, I can also put out better stuff once I do get to the “big day.”

And while I don’t do this for each blog post, I do keep an eye on which ones are shared most, which ones are liked, which ones are forwarded. And every time I write I keep those past lessons in mind.

This kind of focused practice works wonders for our abilities, but it also decreases our fear. Because no matter what we do, we’re always more confident when we’re prepared.

What are the thoughts that keep you from acting? And what do you do to get past them?
